Travel Safety part 2 – P. 46

The second part of our article on Travel Safety addresses, as did the first, business men and women, vacationers and young students travelling abroad, not to mention each one of us in our own city. In the previous article, we talked mainly about preventive self-defense tactics.

Here, on the other hand, you will find a few complementary physical defense techniques.

Recap of the basics

95% of self-defense is preventive.  Our posture, our alertness, our awareness of our surroundings and our self-assurance are mainly psychological advantages — self-defense is, first and foremost, a state of mind and presence. All assailants are predators: they are looking for a victim. Therefore, a strong posture with head, shoulders and back held straight, a look that is alert and aware, a firm and confident step, hands free of items and bags, and valuables out of sight are basic preventive measures.

Success here is based on body language exuding strength and self-assurance. When it comes to self-defense, appearances along with a state of alertness and an awareness of your surroundings spell the difference.

Recap of preventive self-defense

Intuition

Intuition is at the core of self-defense – it’s those “I should haves” and the “I knew its!” that we must learn to listen to, those moments of inspiration from that inner voice we so often brush aside in order to not have to change our best laid plans…   And yet, those instincts are our most powerful allies, warning us of potential dangers and inspiring solutions to resolve them.  Practice listening to your gut instinct on a daily basis – it always knows best, whatever the context!

Self-defense

Whether in a foreign country or right here at home, self-defense is essential.  More than “techniques”, it is a state of mind to which you add personal safety tactics.

Self-defense serves to ensure your personal protection as well as that of your loved one and other innocents. Its purpose is not to protect possessions. Don’t fight for “things” – they ask you for your wallet , for that watch which holds sentimental value, your bag?  Give it to them – your life is worth so much more. (ceci a été ajouté lors de la dernière version française que j’ai acheminée à Marie – après revision de l’article sur internet, je vois que ces changements n’ont pas été pris en compte…  Je vous prie de les ajouter sur la version anglaise)

The Basics…

Self-defense involves a wide range of important physical tactics, from the most preventive to the most combative.

Here, in reading mode, (I removed « et non en classe » simply so people wouldn’t think that these techniques are not shown), I have chosen to present 6 basics to integrate to your arsenal: 3 Reflexes and 3 Strikes.

3 Basic Reflexes

Diversified Flurry

Strike in a determined manner with a flurry of fast and furious hits. Use everything at your disposal — fingers, hands, elbows, knees, heels, teeth… Diversity in the type, order, speed and continuity of your strikes will keep your attacker off-balance, making it difficult for them to recover.
